January 2019 Recap
2 Feb 2019
Following on from my good end of 2018 I continued my running focus on parkrun, completing four parkruns in the week from 29 December to 5 January.
Outside of parkrun however I had fallen into bad habits of not training except occasional short walks, and I was not monitoring either my diet or my weight. I was truly shocked when I was challenged by a very good friend on January 13 to weigh myself - 113.8kg!
In response I immediately changed my diet to follow ketogenic eating habits, which involves eating a very small amount of carbohydrates, a moderate amount of protein & a larger proportion of fat per day. As opposed to being an off-the-cuff response, I had discussed this with my doctor prior to Christmas but hadn't strictly started. Where I had been consuming over 100g carbohydrates per day before, I dropped this to 20-30g carbohydrates per day & immediately saw positive results on the scales.
I owe a great deal of gratitute to the friend who kick-started this process, and another who provided me with daily support & mentorship as an experienced practitioner of the ketogenic diet. Thank you!
I did suffer from some of the side effects of this radical diet change in the second week with fatigue, headaches & dizziness as my body adapted to using fat as a fuel source but these eased significantly from the third week. I no longer experience a "3pm slump" & have been able to increase my running training.
My son was so impressed with the results that he also changed his diet to match mine & he has had positive results on the scales too. We are now enjoying new cuisines, exploring a whole range of low-carb cooking recipes & feeling a lot healthier.
